Pool Table Felt Replacement Cost: Refelting Prices
A professional pool table felt replacement usually costs $250 to $600, cloth and labor included. HomeAdvisor puts the average refelt at about $300, Thumbtack's typical job comes in at $425, and table retailer Sawyer Twain prices an 8-foot table at $300 to $500. Size, cloth grade and any extra work (cushions, leveling, pockets) decide where your bill lands.
There are three ways to pay for it: a mechanic who supplies and installs the cloth, a kit you buy plus someone else's labor, or a kit and your own weekend. Here's what each costs, what a fair quote includes, and the extras that turn a $350 estimate into an $800 invoice.
Pool table felt replacement cost: what the sources say
No two cost sites agree to the dollar, so here are the published numbers side by side, with who said them:
| Source | Pro refelt price | What the number covers |
|---|---|---|
| HomeAdvisor (updated June 2026) | $250 to $450, average about $300 | Refelting, quoted on its pool table moving cost page |
| Thumbtack (Oct 2026) | $260 to $940, typical $425 | National range of fixed prices from its pros |
| Sawyer Twain | $250 to $600; $700 and up with premium cloth | Cloth and labor |
| Sawyer Twain (separate article) | $300 to $600 pro; $100 to $300 DIY | Pro install vs materials only |
| Triangle Billiards | $200 to $300 basic cloth; $450 to $700 high-quality cloth; $600 to $1,000 worsted | A Brunswick dealer's tiers by cloth |
The low numbers assume a basic woolen cloth on a 7 or 8-foot table. The high ones are worsted cloth, bigger tables, or both. For a home 8-footer with standard cloth, $300 to $500 is a realistic budget. If you want Simonis or another worsted, plan on the upper half of these ranges or above it.
Total refelt cost by table size
Sawyer Twain is the one source we found that breaks pro pricing out by size. The last column adds its $300 to $500 figure for new cushion rubber, the most common extra, so you can see the total if the rails need work too.
| Table | Pro refelt, cloth and labor | Refelt plus new cushions | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-foot (bar box) | $250 to $400 | About $550 to $900 | Least cloth, fastest rails |
| 8-foot | $300 to $500 | About $600 to $1,000 | The most common home size |
| 9-foot | $400 to $600 and up | About $700 to $1,100 and up | Tournament size; more cloth and longer rails |
These totals assume standard woolen cloth. Worsted moves any size toward the top of its range or past it: Sawyer Twain prices worsted cloth alone at $250 to $400 against $100 to $200 for woolen, and Triangle Billiards lists $600 to $1,000 for a worsted refelt. Releveling, new pockets and travel fees are on top (see the add-on table below). Doing it yourself, the total is the cloth kit plus tools, $100 to $300 in materials per Sawyer Twain.
For a real-world data point at the top end, Thumbtack describes a commercial client paying $450 per 9-foot table for tournament-grade cloth, and that price already includes a $45-per-table discount for doing seven tables at once.
Measure before you call. An "8-foot" table can be an oversize 8 (88 by 44 inch playing surface) or a pro 8 (92 by 46), and they take different cloth. Our pool table sizes guide shows how to measure the playing surface.
How the cloth you pick changes the price
The cloth is the part of the bill you control. Sawyer Twain puts cloth alone at $100 to $200 for standard woolen and $250 to $400 for worsted. The 8-foot cloth sets we looked at on Amazon in October 2026 fell in the same band, from Championship's Teflon-treated woolen cloths at the bottom to a Simonis 860 kit at the top.
Labor barely changes with the cloth grade. Pool Table Portfolio makes the same point: the woolen-to-worsted gap is modest next to the installation cost. So if the table gets real play, this is the wrong place to save. You pay the mechanic the same to stretch cheap cloth as good cloth, and worsted outlasts woolen under the same use.
- Family table, kids, drinks nearby: a Teflon-treated woolen such as Championship Invitational or Saturn II.
- League player or anyone who wants bar and hall conditions at home: worsted, such as Simonis 860 or 760, or a worsted kit like West State's.
- Two-tone rails (a different color on the rails): Thumbtack lists it as a price factor, so ask before you order.

What a refelt quote should include, and what costs extra
A full refelt means stripping the old cloth, recovering the bed and all six rails, and putting the pockets back on. A "bed only" price can look cheap next to a full quote, so check that the rails are in it.
| Add-on | Published cost | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Releveling the slate | $100 to $300 (Triangle Billiards) | Often included in the refelt; some shops list it separately |
| New cushion rubber | Adds $300 to $500 (Sawyer Twain) | Banks come off short and dead |
| Leather pockets | $100 to $400 (Triangle Billiards) | Torn or cracked leather |
| Travel fee | Varies (Thumbtack lists it as a common add-on) | Rural addresses, long drives |
| Antique table fee | $100 at A.E. Schmidt for tables over 50 years old | Older tables at some shops |
Some shops add conditions you only learn by asking. A.E. Schmidt Billiards in St. Louis, for example, takes rails to its shop for rails-only jobs (two to three days), wants a photo before quoting, installs only cloth it sells, and won't work on one-piece slate, tables 10 feet and up, or particleboard beds.
Before you book, ask:
- Is the price for bed and rails, and which cloth is included?
- Will you check and adjust level, and is that extra?
- Will you refill the slate seams and screw holes while the cloth is off?
- Do you install cloth I buy myself?
- Are travel fees in the price?
- Do you warranty the labor if the cloth loosens or wrinkles?
Thumbtack's advice is to get three quotes and an itemized receipt. A billiard mechanic is the right hire, not a general handyman.
Pool table felt and bumper replacement together
If the cushions are dead, do them in the same visit. New rubber means new rail cloth anyway (A.E. Schmidt requires it for cushion work), so you only pay to strip the rails once. Sawyer Twain puts cushion replacement at $300 to $500 on top of the refelt.
Test the rails before you get quotes: roll a ball firmly into one long rail and watch how lively the rebound is. How to read that test, and which rubber profile your table takes, are in our cushion replacement guide; rail pricing on its own is in rail and cushion replacement cost.
Pool table felt replacement kit vs hiring a pro
A felt replacement kit is the cloth cut for your table size: one bed piece and six rail strips, often with two table spots, and sometimes chalk or a brush. Accuplay's 8-foot set, for instance, is a 54 by 102 inch bed piece plus six 6-inch rail strips. You still need a heavy-duty staple gun, staples, a staple puller and the sockets to pull the rails.
| DIY with a kit | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $100 to $300 in materials (Sawyer Twain), more for Simonis | $250 to $600 typical |
| Time | 4 to 6 hours for a first-timer, per Sawyer Twain; often a full day | About 2 to 4 hours (Thumbtack) |
| Risk | Wrinkles, slack cloth, sloppy pocket cuts | Usually covered by a labor warranty |
| Leveling and seams | Your job, with a good level | Normally part of the visit |
The real saving is the labor, which Sawyer Twain puts at $150 to $300. That's worth having if you're handy and patient. The bed is forgiving; the rails and pocket cuts are where first jobs go wrong. Our how to replace pool table felt guide walks through the whole job, including the stretch and staple spacing the WPA specifies.
A middle path is buying the cloth and hiring only the labor. Not every shop accepts customer cloth, so ask before you order.
Refelting during a move is the cheap time to do it
Moving a slate table means the cloth comes off anyway, and stapled cloth rarely goes back on drum-tight. HomeAdvisor lists refelting at $250 to $450 as an add-on to a move, so if your cloth is more than a few years old, have the movers' mechanic put new cloth on at reassembly. Costs for the move itself are in pool table moving cost, and the teardown is in how to move a pool table.
Is refelting worth it?
On a slate table, almost always. Worn cloth is the cheapest problem a table can have; a cracked slate runs $500 to $1,500 to repair or replace, per Triangle Billiards. A used slate table with fresh cloth, live cushions and a good level plays like a much more expensive table, which is why our used pool table prices guide treats a refelt as part of the purchase budget.
On a cheap MDF table, think twice. A pro refelt can cost more than the table is worth, and fast cloth on a bed that isn't flat shows every dip. Patch it, live with it, or put the money toward a slate table (see slate vs MDF).
And if the damage is one burn or a short tear, you may not need new cloth at all. How to fix pool table felt covers patching and re-stretching.
How often you'll pay for new felt
Sources disagree, and the gap is mostly about how hard the table is used:
- Sawyer Twain: home table with occasional play, three to five years or longer; bars and clubs, one to two years.
- Sawyer Twain's cost article: five to seven years with regular play, up to ten with light use.
- Pool Table Portfolio: seven to ten years for light home use, five to seven for regular family play, six to twelve months in a pool hall.
Worsted outlasts woolen under the same play. Replace when you see bald or shiny paths along the break line, pilling, tears in the playing area, or cloth that won't stay tight, and put a level on the bed before blaming the cloth for roll-offs (how to level a pool table). Brushing after play and a cover between sessions stretch the interval.

Championship Invitational Cloth with Pre-Cut Rails
Budget refelt on a family tableA 75 percent wool, 25 percent nylon woolen cloth with DuPont Teflon treatment, so a spilled drink beads up long enough to blot instead of soaking in. It comes with pre-cut rails and two spots. On a table where kids and guests play, that spill protection saves you from paying for the next refelt early.

Championship Saturn II Billiard Cloth
Lowest-cost real billiard clothChampionship's entry-level home cloth: the same 75/25 Teflon-treated woolen recipe as Invitational, sold with pre-cut rails and two spots. It plays slower than worsted and needs regular brushing and vacuuming, but it is genuine billiard cloth, not the polyester some budget tables ship with.

How much does it cost to refelt a pool table?
Usually $250 to $600 with a professional, cloth and labor included. HomeAdvisor's average is about $300, Thumbtack's typical price is $425, and worsted cloth can push a job to $600 to $1,000 according to Triangle Billiards.
How much to refelt an 8 foot pool table?
Sawyer Twain puts an 8-foot refelt at $300 to $500 with standard cloth. Worsted costs more: the same source lists worsted cloth alone at $250 to $400, against $100 to $200 for woolen.
How much to refelt a 9 foot pool table?
About $400 to $600 or more, per Sawyer Twain. Thumbtack cites a commercial client paying $450 per 9-foot table with tournament cloth and a quantity discount.
How much is pool table felt by itself?
Sawyer Twain lists woolen cloth at $100 to $200 and worsted at $250 to $400. The 8-foot sets we checked on Amazon in October 2026 ran roughly $130 to $410.
Is it cheaper to refelt a pool table yourself?
Yes, by the labor, which Sawyer Twain puts at $150 to $300. You pay for cloth, staples and possibly a staple gun, and you take on the risk of wrinkles or slack cloth. Plan on a full day the first time.
Does refelting include leveling the table?
Often, but not always. Some shops list releveling separately, and Triangle Billiards puts it at $100 to $300 on its own. Ask for it in the quote, since the cloth is off and the slate is easy to reach.
Can I replace only the bed cloth and keep the rail cloth?
Some shops quote bed-only jobs. If the rail cloth is tight and clean it can work, but new and old cloth wear and look different, and most quotes are for bed and rails together.
How long does a pool table refelt take?
About 2 to 4 hours for a professional, per Thumbtack. Sawyer Twain estimates 4 to 6 hours for a first-time DIYer, or a full day if you work slowly.
Should I refelt when I move my pool table?
If the cloth is a few years old, yes. It has to come off for the move anyway, and HomeAdvisor lists refelting at $250 to $450 as an add-on, which saves a second service call.
How often does pool table felt need replacing?
Sources range from three to five years (Sawyer Twain, occasional home play) to seven to ten years (Pool Table Portfolio, light use). Bars and pool halls replace cloth every six months to two years.
