How Much Does a Pool Table Weigh?

A slate pool table weighs about 600 to 1,200 pounds depending on size and build, and most of that is the stone. A non-slate (MDF) table weighs roughly 200 to 320 pounds. Real listings show the spread: Playcraft's 8-foot Charles River lists 700 pounds, while Diamond's 8-foot Professional lists 1,000.

The gap between those two 8-footers is why one-number answers online disagree so much. Below are weights by size from makers' own specs, what the slate alone weighs, what each piece weighs when you move it, and what all of it means for your floor.

Quick answer: Most 7-foot slate pool tables weigh about 600 to 800 pounds, 8-foot tables about 700 to 1,000 pounds, and 9-foot tables about 900 to 1,200 pounds. The 1-inch slate alone on an 8-foot table is roughly 485 to 505 pounds, about 160 to 170 pounds per piece of a three-piece set. Non-slate MDF tables run about 200 to 320 pounds.

The ranges come from the makers' spec pages and listings named in the table, cross-checked against Billiards Direct's moving guide and Imperial, which says tables often weigh 700 to 1,000 pounds. Brunswick and Olhausen don't publish weights, so for those, ask the dealer.

Why two 8-foot slate tables can differ by 300 pounds

Four things move the number.

  1. Slate thickness. One-inch slate is about a third heavier than 3/4 inch. Many entry-level tables use 3/4 inch.
  2. The cabinet. A plywood or furniture cabinet on four legs weighs far less than a commercial cabinet with heavy beams, a ball return and a full apron. Diamond builds the second kind.
  3. Wood backing. Most slate has a wood frame glued underneath so the cloth can be stapled to it. It adds weight that density math doesn't count.
  4. What's being measured. Some articles quote the slate, some the whole table, some the shipping weight with crates. A figure that sounds wrong is often just measuring something else.

So the Charles River at 700 pounds isn't suspicious. A 1-inch slate set of about 500 pounds plus a hardwood cabinet and rails lands right there. A commercial 8-footer with a heavy frame lands near 1,000.

How much does slate pool table slate weigh by itself?

Slate has a specific gravity of about 2.7 to 2.8, roughly 14 to 14.6 pounds per square foot for every inch of thickness. The slab is bigger than the playing surface because it runs under the rails. These are the estimates from our slate thickness guide, before pocket cuts and wood backing:

Table3/4 in slate, total1 in slate, totalEach piece of three (1 in)Each piece of three (3/4 in)
7 ftAbout 280 to 295 lbAbout 375 to 390 lbAbout 125 to 130 lbAbout 95 lb
8 ftAbout 365 to 380 lbAbout 485 to 505 lbAbout 160 to 170 lbAbout 120 to 125 lb
9 ftAbout 455 to 475 lbAbout 610 to 635 lbAbout 200 to 210 lbAbout 150 to 160 lb

Add a few pounds per piece for the wood backing. Billiards Direct gives a planning range of 150 to 250 pounds per piece, which covers the heavier 9-foot and thick-backed slabs. A one-piece slate from a 7-foot bar table is 400 to 600 pounds in one slab, by the same source.

The share is what surprises people: on most slate tables the stone is well over half the total weight.

Real slate or not? Let the weight decide

If a full-size table claims slate and weighs under about 400 pounds, it isn't stone. Sellers use words like Slate-Tech, Slatron, Accuslate and "slate-like" for engineered tops, and photos can't tell you the difference. The shipping weight on a product page is harder to fudge than the description above it.

The Fat Cat Reno with its Accuslate surface, for example, lists 313 pounds. Compare that with 600 pounds for the smallest real slate table in our chart. What those materials are and how they hold up is covered in slate vs MDF pool tables.

Can your floor hold a pool table?

On a code-built floor, almost always. The 2021 International Residential Code (Table R301.5) designs living areas for a live load of 40 pounds per square foot and sleeping areas for 30. Diamond's Pro-Am lists 1,000 pounds on a 104 by 59 inch cabinet at 8 feet, which averages about 23.5 pounds per square foot. The 9-foot version, 1,200 pounds on 114 by 64 inches, works out about the same, roughly 24.

Two caveats keep that from being the whole story:

  • The weight reaches the floor through four to six legs, not spread evenly, and players stand around the table on top of it. That's why engineers check the joists under the legs, not just the average.
  • Strength isn't the same as stiffness. A floor that carries the load can still bounce enough to move a slow ball when someone walks past. That matters more for play than any risk of failure.

Ground floors on a slab and basements are the easy case. Upper floors, long spans, bonus rooms over garages and finished attics deserve a closer look, which our guide to putting a pool table upstairs walks through.

What the weight means when you move it

Nobody moves a slate table in one piece. It comes apart into parts that a crew can lift:

PartApproximate weightLift
One slate piece, 7 or 8 ft, 1 inAbout 125 to 170 lb plus backingTwo people minimum, three on stairs
One slate piece, 9 ft, 1 inAbout 200 to 210 lb plus backingThree people
One-piece bar slate400 to 600 lbPro crew with equipment
Rails, legs, frameLight to moderateOne or two people
Whole MDF table, legs offAbout 200 to 320 lbTwo or three people

The order of work is in how to take apart a pool table, hauling and crew size in how to move a pool table, and what a pro charges in pool table moving cost.

One rule worth repeating: don't drag or tip an assembled slate table, even across a room. Lifting one corner racks the frame and cracks the seam filler between the slabs.

Is heavier better?

Up to a point. The weight comes mostly from slate, and slate is what keeps a bed flat for decades and lets an installer re-level it after every move. An MDF table at 250 pounds is easy to carry and fine for kids and casual games, but the bed can sag or wave with humidity and load over the years.

Past that, extra pounds buy diminishing returns. A 1,000-pound commercial frame is built to survive bar abuse and resist being bumped out of level. A home table at 700 pounds with 1-inch, three-piece slate plays just as true in a quiet basement. Pick on slate spec and frame quality, not the scale. How heavy is one piece of pool table slate?

Do I need to reinforce my floor for a pool table?

Usually not on a code-built floor. Living areas are designed for 40 pounds per square foot and bedrooms for 30, and a 1,000-pound 8-footer averages about 24 over its footprint. Old houses, cut joists, long spans and finished attics are worth having checked.

Can I move a slate pool table without taking it apart?

Not safely beyond a few feet. Tipping or dragging an assembled slate table racks the frame and cracks the seams. Any real move means taking it apart and carrying the slate in pieces.
