Best Pool Cue Shaft Cleaner: Pool Stick Cleaners Compared
The best pool cue shaft cleaner for a maple shaft is a cleaner and conditioner set from a cue maker, such as McDermott's Shaft Care Kit, backed up by a small micro-abrasive pad like the Q-Wiz for league night. For a carbon shaft, the best cleaner is the one its maker names: Predator's REVO wipes, Cuetec's wipes or isopropyl alcohol, or a damp towel for a McDermott Defy. Wood shaft products can void a carbon warranty.
Every pool stick cleaner sold falls into one of five types. Here's what each does, which shafts it suits, and the picks worth buying.
Our picks at a glance
| Pick | Type | Shaft | Use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| McDermott Shaft Care Kit | Cleaner, micro-abrasive papers, conditioner, leather pad | Wood | For a full clean when a dry wipe no longer works |
| Q-Wiz | Two-sided micro-abrasive disc | Wood | In the case, between racks |
| McDermott McMagic papers | Washable micro-abrasive sheets | Wood | When the shaft feels rough after cleaning |
| Microfiber cloths | Plain cloth | Wood and carbon | After every session |
| Porper suede burnisher | Leather slicker | Wood | To finish after cleaning |
| Your carbon maker's wipes | Pre-moistened wipes | Carbon | Weekly or when tacky |
The method behind these, step by step, is in how to clean a pool cue. This page is about what to buy.
The five types of pool stick cleaner
| Type | Examples | What it does | Removes wood? | Carbon safe? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid cleaner or conditioner | McDermott Renew and Ultra-Glide, Tiger Crystal, Triple-T Cue Shield, Becue BioCare95 | Dissolves chalk and hand oil; conditioners seal the pores | No | Only if the label says so (Becue lists carbon) |
| Pre-moistened wipes | Predator REVO, Cuetec, Triple 60, Bull Carbon, Smart Wipes | Fast clean with no bottle or cloth | No | Carbon wipes yes; check the brand |
| Micro-abrasive pads and papers | Q-Wiz, McMagic, Longoni Abrado, Tiger Shaft Smoother | Scrubs off grime and smooths raised grain | A very little | No |
| Leather and cloth slickers | Porper, Cue Cube Shaft Slicker, cloth slicker sleeves | Wipes and burnishes in one stroke | No | No (Predator and McDermott rule out burnishers) |
| Plain cloths | Microfiber | Daily wipe; damp for a deeper clean | No | Yes |
Most players need one item from the last row and one from the first or third. A sticky maple shaft is almost always grime the liquid takes off; the abrasive pad is for when the wood itself feels rough.
Liquid shaft cleaners for wood
A liquid cleaner lifts what a damp cloth leaves behind without you scrubbing. McDermott's directions for Renew are typical: sprinkle it on a clean damp cloth, wipe the shaft, repeat if needed, and wipe off the residue. Tiger's Crystal Shaft Cleaner works the same way, applied to a cloth while you turn the shaft and work from one end to the other.
What separates the good ones is what they leave. McDermott, which makes both cues and cleaners, warns against shaft products containing waxes or oils such as silicone and lanolin, and says those soften the wood. So read the label. Products from cue makers and billiard brands (McDermott, Tiger, Longoni) are made for bare maple; a household spray isn't.
Conditioners are the second bottle. McDermott says its Ultra-Glide seals the wood pores and should be buffed for about 30 seconds after the McMagic papers. If you want only one product, a cleaner matters more than a conditioner.
Micro-abrasive pads: the league-night tool
A Q-Wiz or a set of McMagic papers is what most players carry in the case. They clean and smooth in a few strokes and wash clean for reuse.
- Q-Wiz is a small disc with a cleaning side and a polishing side. You glide it up and down the shaft with long, light strokes and rinse it under water when it's dirty.
- McMagic comes as four sheets you work from coarse to fine. McDermott's instructions say to cradle the sheet around the shaft with a circular twisting motion and avoid building up heat. One retailer lists the set as equivalent to 7500 grit.
- Tiger's Shaft Smoother has a rough side for cleaning and a fine side for burnishing.
The honest catch: these are abrasives, just very fine ones. Light, even strokes along the full length take off grime and fuzz. Pressing hard on one spot, every day, slowly takes off wood. Use them when the shaft feels rough, not as a nervous habit between every shot. And never on carbon.
Cleaners for carbon fiber shafts
Carbon doesn't absorb chalk and oil the way maple does, so it needs less cleaning, but it's fussier about what touches it. Each maker publishes its own rule:
| Shaft | Maker's cleaner | Off limits |
|---|---|---|
| Predator REVO, Poison Venom | REVO cleaning wipes, a water-damp cloth, or 90% isopropyl only | Burnishers, sandpaper, polishes, wood oils, wax, talc |
| Cuetec Cynergy, AVID | 75% or stronger isopropyl on a soft cloth; Cuetec's alcohol-infused wipes | Any abrasive or chemical treatment, talc, hand chalk |
| McDermott Defy | A damp towel, or an alcohol wipe | Sanding, burnishing, talc, any abrasive |
| Any brand | Triple 60 says its carbon wipes suit any carbon shaft (not wood) | Check your maker first |
Each maker's sanding or treatment rule is tied to its warranty, so one pass with a wood-shaft product can cost you the warranty on the most expensive part of your cue. More in our carbon fiber shaft guide.
Household products: what works and what doesn't
- Water on a microfiber cloth, wrung out until barely damp: fine on both wood and carbon, as long as you dry the shaft right after.
- Magic Eraser: works, but Dr. Dave's FAQ points out it's a micro-abrasive that wears the surface with frequent use. An occasional deep clean on wood only.
- Isopropyl alcohol: the carbon makers above use it. For wood, a cue cleaner is the safer bet.
- Furniture polish and silicone sprays: no. Predator says polish and wax leave a film on carbon that affects cue ball action, and McDermott warns against silicone on wood.
- Dish soap: for linen wraps, not shafts. Predator's wrap method uses a drop of Dawn on a damp sponge; see wrap types.
Is there a pool stick vacuum cleaner?
No. Nothing vacuums a cue; the dirt on a shaft is a film of chalk and hand oil that only wiping removes. If you were looking for a vacuum for the table cloth, see our pool table vacuum guide.
Talc and hand powder aren't shaft cleaners
Talc bags and cone chalk go on your bridge hand to cut friction. They don't clean anything, and on carbon they're banned outright: Predator, Cuetec and McDermott all list talc and hand chalk as off limits for their carbon shafts. If your hand drags on a clean shaft, a glove is the cleaner fix. See pool hand chalk and pool gloves.
How to choose
- One maple cue, plays weekly: microfiber cloths plus a Q-Wiz. Add the McDermott kit when a damp wipe stops fixing the stickiness.
- Plays several nights a week or in a humid room: the full McDermott kit at home, Q-Wiz in the case, and a leather burnisher.
- Carbon shaft: microfiber cloths and your maker's wipes. Skip everything else on this page.
- Older house cue that's gone gray: liquid cleaner first, then the papers, then burnish it and decide whether to wax it.
If the shaft is dented or the finish on the butt is failing, cleaning won't fix it; how to refinish a pool cue covers those.

What is the best pool cue shaft cleaner?
For maple, a cue maker's cleaner and conditioner, such as McDermott's Renew and Ultra-Glide (sold together in its Shaft Care Kit), plus a micro-abrasive pad like the Q-Wiz for touch-ups. For carbon, the wipes or alcohol your shaft's maker specifies.
What can I use to clean my pool stick at home?
A microfiber cloth, dry and then barely damp, handles most cleaning on both wood and carbon. Dry the shaft right away. Avoid furniture polish, silicone sprays and anything abrasive on carbon.
Can I use wood shaft cleaners on a carbon fiber shaft?
Not unless the label says carbon. The big carbon makers rule out abrasives and burnishers on their shafts, along with most treatments, and some of those rules are warranty conditions.
Do shaft cleaning pads wear down the shaft?
Slightly. Pads like the Q-Wiz and McMagic papers are very fine abrasives. Used with light strokes along the whole shaft when it feels rough, the wear is minor; heavy daily use in one spot is what changes a taper.
Is a Magic Eraser safe on a pool cue?
Occasionally on wood. Dr. Dave's FAQ notes it is a micro-abrasive that wears the surface if used often. Don't use it on carbon.
How often should I use a shaft cleaner?
Only when a dry or damp wipe stops making the shaft feel smooth. A dry microfiber wipe after every session keeps that from happening often.
